Our Doctors

Monica Dougherty, DVM, Owner

Dr. Dougherty is a central valley native.  She grew up in Modesto and displayed a fascination with animals from a young age.  Her folks tolerated a parade of animals including: hermit crabs, snakes, lizards, cats, an iguana, and even a crayfish who lived in a kiddie pool in the back yard for several years.  Dr. D earned her bachelor’s degree in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience from UCSD and her DVM from Purdue in Indiana.  She practiced medicine in Turlock for 8 years, and after a brief stint living and working in the Bay Area, returned to the Central Valley to pursue her dream of practice ownership and purchased Madera Veterinary Center in 2013.

Dr. Dougherty is married to Steve, the finance manager and co-owner of Madera Veterinary Center.  They have an active 12 year old daughter and a mellow 9 year old son.  She currently owns a lion's mane bunny and an adopted a cat from the Madera County Shelter named Tuna.  Dr. D enjoys meeting all of Madera Veterinary Center's great clients and becoming an active member of the Madera community.  In her limited time away from MVC, Dr. D enjoys going to her family's cabin in Sequoia National Park, spending time with family, reading Sci-Fi/Fantasy books and veterinary articles and exercise.

Teresa Carr, Associate DVM

The best part of Dr. Carr's job as an associate veterinarian is the satisfaction of seeing her patients respond to a treatment and the appreciation of their owners.  During the course of her day Dr. Carr examines patients, listens to client's concerns about their pets, administers vaccinations, evaluates x-rays, reviews blood work, and performs surgeries. Dr. Carr joined Madera Veterinary Center in 2002 and has helped hundreds of pets live long and healthy lives.

Growing up on a dairy farm in Chino California, Dr. Carr has always had an interest in working with animals and has very fond memories of growing up on a farm.  After completing her undergraduate studies at Cal Poly Pomona with a BS in Animal Science and a minor in Chemistry Dr. Carr graduated from THE Ohio State University Veterinary College in 1996.  In 1998 Dr. Carr moved to Madera when her family owned farm relocated to the area.  Dr. Carr stays active outside of work with her husband, three teenage boys, and soon to be teen daughter and all of their school and sports activities.  Her furry family includes birds, dogs and cats.  In her free time Dr. Carr enjoys playing the piano and drawing and being involved in her kids school.

Mara Franz, Associate DVM

Dr. Mara Franz joined Madera Veterinary Center in July of 2011.  Born and raised in Roseville California (just outside of Sacramento), Dr. Franz completed her undergraduate and Veterinary degrees at UC Davis.  Shortly after graduating in 2011, Dr. Franz moved to Madera and joined MVC as an associate veterinarian.  The best part of her job is getting to know the MVC clients and their pets, and giving all of them the best possible care.  On a typical day Dr. Franz sees clients and their pets for wellness exams, treats sick or injured pets, and performs surgery.  She enjoys every day at MVC because each day is different and a challenge, and she is always learning something new.

While growing up, Dr. Franz loved helping animals, and always had a stray or baby animal to care for.  Dr. Franz can't imagine doing anything else besides being a veterinarian. Married to her husband Duskin, Dr. Franz has dogs, horses, cats, numerous chickens, turkeys, and goats (her favorite) .  While not at MVC, Dr. Franz enjoys horseback riding, reading, gardening, and spending time outdoors.

Loretta Lane, Associate DVM

Dr. Loretta Lane joined MVC in 2020, but has know Dr. D since she was 16 when she took her two cats in for an exam when Dr. D was working in Turlock.  She showed immense interest in their well being and impressed Dr. D so much that she offered a volunteer job shadow position to help Dr. Lane explore the veterinary field.  Soon, Dr. Lane was offered a paid position at the Turlock clinic and has been enthusiastically pursing veterinary medicine ever since.

Dr. Lane brings with her the latest teachings and a fierce enthusiasm for general practice medicine. She has experience with wildlife and has many, many hours of in clinic experience serving the Central Valley.  Dr. Lane's pet family include a horse, goats, a dog, and a cat.  With the addition of Dr. Lane, we will be a 4-doctor team, with improved availability, a wider array of interests and an infusion of new knowledge and ideas. We know our wonderful family of clients and critters will welcome Dr. Lane with as much enthusiasm as the MVC team already has!
